The value for your sterling silverware can vary widely, depending
on who you are talking to. An appraiser will often give a high
value estimate, but there is no guarantee you can sell it for
that price. The true value is how much you can sell it for. There
are three primary outlets for selling: Private parties,
silver dealers, and pawn shops.
Pawn Shops
A pawn shop will typically pay by the ounce, and usually pays
the scrap price for silver ($10 to$12 per troy ounce). They might
pay more for more desirable manufacturers such as Tiffany or
Cartier. Some pawn shops won't accept sterling silver due to
the higher likelihood of it being stolen merchandise.
Silver Dealers
Silver dealers will buy by the piece, and will pay more for desirable
patterns. Pricing is usually consistent among silver dealers,
and is a safer way to sell your items quickly. There are two
companies I recommend you contact: Michele's Silver in Austin,
Texas at 1-800-332-4693, and Replacements LTD in Greensboro,
North Carolina at 1-800-562-4462.
Private Party
You will usually get a higher price from a private party interested
in your pattern. This does involve more work, and involves more
risk. You can sell your items online at auction sites like ebay.com, or
free online classifieds such as Craig's List. The advantage to online auctions
is that you can set a minimum price you are willing to sell for.
Silver dealers also frequent these auctions, and may have customers
for your pattern.
